The sentence expressed by Iron Man executives last weekend to each other was probably “crisis”. Some executives, for the Iron Man movie - the stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow - expressed concerns that Grand Theft Auto IV would seriously undermine the film opening weekend.
It appears that the executives Iron Man had little to fear when the final money’s right came in yesterday. The film brought in $ 100.7M over the weekend - the heady tally makes it the second highest gross for a non-sequel behind Spider-Man and the tenth highest film of all time. Iron Man “returns were encouraged by the showing in 4105 an impressive theater.”We could not have hoped for a better way for Marvel Studios to blast off,” said Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel.
The strong performance by Iron Man in theaters reinforces the fact that the Hollywood big-budget films can still attract an audience despite the high ticket prices and a weakened economy. The results also echo Marvel Studios president of marketing Geoff Ammer’s comments last week. “The two properties can coexist on the market,” said Bunting, 27 April. “We believe that the audience will go to see Iron Man part of their weekend plans.”
For his part, Grand Theft Auto IV has drawn in record time figures for themselves. Although the final figures for the United States has not yet been released, estimates peg that the game will be the opening week of approximately $ 400M - it would surpass the $ 300M High Water Mark of Halo 3 in 2007.
