Volkswagen and Sanyo Electric Co will begin to develop lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid electric traction installations or vehicles. Volkswagen plans to begin importing and using these batteries in hybrids and electric in 2012. At this company pushed the development agreement between Nissan Motor Co and NEC Corp. begin mass production of lithium-ion batteries that are safe for the environment than nickel-hydrogen.

Sanyo produces nickel-hydrogen battery type, which can repeatedly recharged, and they will be used Volkswagen and its Audi AG subsidiary of the first hybrid model Volkswagen group, which will go into production next year. But lithium-ion batteries, which are under development, could be the depth and weight of nickel-hydrogen, reducing the mass of the car at 200-300 kg. New car battery also will give greater fuel efficiency and better traction characteristics.

Sanyo, for the moment, has the largest market share lithium-ion batteries used in PCs and mobile phones, and plans to invest $ 973 million in the creation and development of these types of batteries for cars in the next three years.
