According to information leaked to press Taiwanese manufacturers of notebook PCs, one of the components of the coming upgrade Intel Centrino mobile platform 2, which is before the announcement working title Montevina, will drive for flash memory - SSD (Solid State Drives). Moreover, Intel plans to start deliveries in time for a new generation of portable PCs to establish its own production of the solid drives.
Nothing in it is not surprising, because the company is one of the world’s largest suppliers of flash memory both widespread varieties - NOR-type and NAND-type. Intel Plans for the production of solid drives also can not be called news, because even in winter, in the days of CES 2008, the company presented a miniature 12 x 18 x 1,8 mm 0.6 - gram drive Z-P140 SSD PATA interface with a capacity of up to 2 GB 16 GB for compact mobile devices, and even last year established a production SSD drives Intel Z-U130 interface with USB.
But now it is a completely new and so far little-known product - intensive models SSD for notebooks, which presumably will receive the title of Intel High Performance SSD and initially (probably because of higher prices than traditional HDD) will be offered in the middle of portable PCs and productive high-end segments, as well as for corporate decisions (Centrino PRO).
Unnamed industrial sources also report that initially drives Intel High Performance SSD will be delivered in two versions - Client X25-M and Client X18-M, that is, at 2.5 - and 1.8 inch - inch form factor, respectively. The first batch of solid drives Intel, which will appear on the market in the third quarter of 2008, will have a capacity of 80 Gb interface and SATA, but already by the fourth quarter of Intel plans to bring capacity up to 160 GB, and in 2009 - up to 250 gigabytes and more.
