Sony introduced a transparent full display in the form of lenses for glasses, transparency is 85%, brightness - 2500 cd/m2. The user can see the full color video imposed on the surrounding human subjects.
In developing the device company focused on the following points:
- Transparency of more than 80% for use in poor lighting;
- Colour homogeneity of not more than 0009, equivalent to TV, and more than 2000 cd/m2 brightness;
- Location of the optical system to bow to make thin lenses, as with conventional glasses;
- The mass of less than 80 grams to make comfortable using the device for two hours.
To do so, Sony has simplified the structure. Used holographic light and signal source, consisting of light source LED (LED), and transparent LCD panel. The light modulated transparent LCD panel and delivered to the eye through the holographic light.
Holographic light is a key component of the device. The holographic film are located at two sites outside of the glass glasses 1.4 mm thick and 50 mm in length. The light falls into the waveguide, reflected the first holographic layer. Then fully reflected in the glass is repeated before the light finally affect the second hologram layer on the eyes.
The holographic films reflect a certain color spectrum in a given direction and miss the rest of color. Reflects wavelength holographic governed by the scheme. Sony has developed three holographic film that match the primary colors (RGB). And not necessarily that the film had been placed under certain angle, because they can reflect light in different directions, even if the light is aimed parallel light. This reduces the thickness of the device.
When three holographic film simply imposed on each other color uniformity violated because of their mutual influence. Crosstalk occur because of reflections in different directions depending on the wavelength (color). Therefore, Sony used two types of lightguide. The first type reflects the green, and the second - red and blue. Despite the use of two lightguide, has achieved a total thickness of 3 mm (thickness of 1.4 mm each, the gap - 0.2 mm). Colors display at 120% of the NTSC colour uniformity in 0008. The prototype supports QVGA-resolution, has a mass 120 g and the contrast of 50:1. With enlightened films display transparency reaches 85%.
